Why am I standing for election?

You will be keenly aware that in the last year we have faced a range of circumstances that presented us with some challenging problems and difficult choices.

These have not gone away and I believe now and in the future we need a strong rational group who with dialogue and consultation with branches and members can provide relevant, thoughtful and determined representation.

My experience to date, I believe, stands me in good stead to move to the senior level. There is a dynamism in the industry which requires a dynamic and decisive executive.

I want to be part of that leadership.

I strongly believe that I can influence the current and future debate utilising my experience, honesty and cogent views. I will work to move the executive to engage, to drive the quality of debate and to encourage all the executive to be loyal to the decision making process.

I believe “if a job is worth doing it’s worth doing well”, an attitude I would carry on to the executive role.

Some people think we should not work with the employer - If that is the case the consequence of not engaging with on a continuous basis could be disastrous, leaving the way open for employers to take liberties with menbers terms, conditions, pay, pensions and other life-affecting issues.

I am ready to meet the employer and stand up for the members.

Honesty versus Popularity

There is a dilemma whilst campaigning for election: Do you attempt to gain votes by making popular statements, statements of sympathy and claim to be in touch with the membership? Or do you face the reality of the tough choices and engage with members, explain the rationale, give members an insight in to the future swing from traditional to new products and how this affects everyone in the industry and not discreet sections of the communities we represent.

I believe everyone has a right to have a personal view and respect their right to put these forward in any debate, but as in any committee whether branch or executive you should be bound by the collective decision. A failure to do so is destructive and leads to uncertainty amongst the membership and lack of credibility in the union as a whole.

It’s easy to be popular and to claim you are in touch with the members, it is also easy to take a popular stance rather than face the main issues of today.

It needs people on the Executive who are ready to face the challenges and engage with the members and employers.

I am ready to face those challenges.
